What Schools MUST Do…
Ensure Equal Access:
Schools must ensure that students with needs (disability) can access and participate in education just like students without needs.
Consultat on Adjustments:
Reasonable adjustments should be provided in consultation with the student and/or their associates, typically involving their parents/guardians and other key stakeholders like your child’s Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and other Allied Health Professionals.
Provide Reasonable Adjustments:
Schools are required to make or provide "reasonable adjustments" as necessary to enable students' access and participation in education.
The information provided above isn't just a suggestion for how schools should ideally operate - it's actually mandated by federal law. Specifically, it's outlined in the Disability Standards for Education (2005), which is part of the Australian Disability Discrimination Act (1992).
